Aim and Offer
At Silsden Primary School, we believe that promoting children’s healthy lifestyles and providing opportunities for participation in (competitive) sport is a key role of the school.
In addition to PE within the curriculum, we offer various extra-curricular activities including active clubs and chances to represent the school in local events organised primarily by the Bradford School Games (Bronte Cluster). In addition, we enter other events organised by South Craven School, The Holy Family Catholic School (Keighley), Bingley Amateur Swimming Club and others.
The vast majority of these events are organised for Key Stage 2 (KS2) children only.
In 2018-19, our offer and rates of participation earned us the Silver School Games Award.
Selection for our school teams is balanced between offering sport-specific opportunities for talented pupils, giving chance to take part in taster sessions regardless of ability and providing places for pupils who may not otherwise have the opportunity to participate. Most competitions are age-group specific, with more events held for upper KS2.
Whilst we try our best to provide transportation to events during school time, the majority of after-school competitions rely on parent transportation. Your help with this is massively appreciated!
It is really important for children representing the school to wear appropriate kit whenever possible. Having a good stock of school kit is one way of ensuring this – something that not only gives children extra pride when representing the school, but also helps for safeguarding reasons at larger events. Kit unfortunately gets worn out, lost or unusable for other reasons so we will be looking to invest in new stock in Autumn 2020. If you are interested in sponsoring the kit in any way then please contact Mr Pickering (Wider Curriculum Lead) or Mrs Boyes (School Business Manager) via the school office.
Community Sports Clubs
We are keen to be involved with sports clubs from our local community – be it to arrange your involvement in after-school clubs, bring in specialist teaching or coaching, facilitate taster sessions or to promote your community events to our pupils. In 2019/20, we have enjoyed tennis taster sessions in Year 2 from Ilkley Lawn Tennis and Squash Club and after-school and lunchtime coaching sessions from Bradford City FC Community Foundation. Many of our pupils enjoy out of school activities at Silsden AFC, Silsden Storm ARLFC and local running clubs including Wharfedale Harriers. If you would like to get involved with our school then please contact Mr Pickering or Mrs Boyes via the school office.
For some key events, it is useful to have additional (non-school) adults acting in a more supervisory capacity. This is requested via the event details where necessary, but if you have a particular interest in a sport and feel that you are able to offer your time then please contact Mr Pickering via the school office.
Photos, results and reports from extra-curricular events are shared via our School Twitter account where possible. Please note that you do not need to have a Twitter account yourself to view our Tweets!
We have had tremendous success in Cross Country races in 2019-20.
In the Keighley & Craven Schools’ Cross Country League, we placed in 2nd position in Y34 girls, Y34 boys and Y56 girls in the final standings. Our Y56 boys team finished in 4th.
Individually, we had five children in the Top 10 of the final standings for their respective age groups, including Isobel P winning the Y56 girls’ league! Other Top 10 final placings went to James R (2nd, Y56 boys), Dylan A (3rd, Y34 boys), Thomas T (5th, Y34 boys) and Holly F (6th, Y56 girls).
7 of 8 gender-specific year group teams qualified for the Bradford District Finals at Cliffe Castle on 22nd January 2020, with 5 of the 7 progressing on further to the West Yorkshire Games at Temple Newsam on 11th March.
With over a hundred runners in each race, we had some fantastic results: Dylan 5th (Y3 boys), Isobel 4th (Y5 girls) and James 12th (Y6 boys). Their results earned Isobel and James a place at the National Championships – an event which unfortunately had to be postponed.
Our Y5/6 boys’ team won their Bronte Cluster league in October 2019. This led to qualification to the Bradford Area Finals at Hansen Academy in February 2020 – a superb achievement.
In the Bingley Amateur Swimming Club 2020 Gala, our swim team placed =5th in our semi-final, earning qualification for the finals in June 2020.
Our Y5/6 girls were crowned champions of the Holy Family Catholic School ‘High-Five’ netball league in Spring 2020! The girls’ victory earned them progress to the Bradford Summer Games in June.
Children have represented the school in several other sports this year: Quicksticks Hockey, Boccia, Basketball and Sportshall athletics.
Teams have been entered into the following sports that are due to take place in the Summer terms of 2020: Tennis, Cricket, Tag Rugby, Dodgeball, Golf and Rounders. In addition, further football events have been entered.
